Reading

At Wistaston Church Lane, we believe that reading is fundamental to a child's love of learning. Whether reading for pleasure or for independent study, we want children to develop the skills necessary to become confident and competent readers.

Aims for our children:

  • Find enjoyment in the texts they read.
  • Improve reading accuracy and fluency.
  • Know what to do at the point of difficulty.
  • Read with appreciation and understanding.
  • Pose questions about what they read.
  • Approach reading tasks with confidence.

Reading plays an important role in our curriculum for all children and includes individual reading with an adult, group reading sessions and whole-class comprehension tasks.  In KS2 (Y3-5), children also develop their reading skills by following the 'Success For All' programme.

We promote reading for pleasure by sharing books in class and taking part in special events throughout the year.

Children progress through coloured book bands, which help them to develop the reading skills, understanding and behaviours required at each stage of their development. They are regularly assessed against a set of key objectives to ensure they are reading at the correct level for them.
